Message from the Principal

Dear King Abdulaziz School Learning Community,

Asalaamualaikum, warm wishes and greetings from Manchester, United Kingdom. It is with huge honour and delight that I pen this introductory message to the entire staff community at KAS as your newly appointed Head of School.

My name is Rizwan Khan and I am truly honoured to be joining you in August 2022 to further enhance KAS in implementing its vision, mission and values, as well as those of the International Baccalaureate. KAS has been a pioneer in being the first IB Continuum World School in a blessed and holy land, Medina.

With the blessings of Almighty God, I trust that you are preparing for a well-deserved summer vacation, particularly since the global landscape of education has endured a global pandemic, impacting learning and teaching in IB schools worldwide.

Thank you for the superb work you have accomplished individually and collectively during a period of uncertainty caused by the pandemic and for remaining resilient. Often, such challenging moments enable us to practice reflection, an important part of personal and professional growth. May you all have an enjoyable and safe vacation with your families.

Through the unwavering support of the distinguished school board, I am delighted to announce that I have accepted the position as Head of School at KAS, beginning August 2022. Whilst there is some time prior to my arrival, I would like to extend my greetings and welcome to the entire community in this short message. Foremost, my appreciation to the Board for their warm, positive and supportive welcome.

My educational philosophy is summarised in a single word: Excellence. An outstanding education is life changing and more significantly, through an IB education, our students are future leaders who will be positioned in a moment of time and location to make the biggest impact on the communities they will reside and lead in time to come. We are humbled to be able to teach and serve a student population in the stunning and tranquil city of Medina and to contribute to this sacred land. A huge blessing for which I repeat, Alhamdulilah.

The mission of KAS paired with its vision is an exemplary model of an educational system that prepares active and lifelong learners in a caring environment. Through our unified approach and proactive collaboration, we aspire to fulfil our common mission, guided by KAS and the IB. You have many strengths to celebrate as a community and I look forward to supporting the school in a new phase of excellence in education for our foremost important individuals, our students.

Whilst we will learn more about one another during the Open House event at school and during programme-specific learning community meetings, you will find a short bio of my professional background below.

After over 15 years in education and leadership across schools and contexts in England, Dubai and Tbilisi, I am thrilled at this remarkable opportunity to lead in one of the holiest cities in the world. My school roles have included, language & literature teacher in MYP & DP, Head of Department, MYP coordinator and Middle School Head. I have also attended the world-renowned Principal’s Training Centre in London and have completed my Masters in Education: Leadership and Management from the University of Derby. In addition, I completed my undergraduate in Psychology, where I graduated with a First-Class Honours from the University of Huddersfield before pursuing formal teacher training, Professional Graduate Diploma in Education from the University of Bolton. As a passionate lifelong learner, I view this as key to growth and success for all members of a dynamic learning community.

Additionally, I support the International Baccalaureate as part of the IB Educator Network as a lead educator, evaluation leader, programme leader, content developer, workshop leader and online facilitator. It is a huge privilege to be able to support schools across Europe, Africa, Middle East and the Americas on strengthening and advancing the implementation of IB programmes in a range of school contexts. Apart from education, I have also worked with the Police Force in the UK and as a professional radio broadcaster for over 17 years at major broadcasting platforms.

At this juncture, I encourage you to enjoy a well-deserved restful summer vacation with those near and dearest to you and god-willing, I look forward to meeting you in person on August 21st refreshed and recharged for a productive start to the new academic year.

Kind regards,

Rizwan Khan

Head of School
